2012 Young Writers-In-Residence

Applications for 2012 Young Writer-In-Residence must be post marked on or before 5pm, Tuesday, 31 July 2012

Three Positions are available for the week of Sun 18 Nov – Tue 27 Nov 2012

Three Young Writers, up to the age of twenty-five years, will be selected for a 10-day residency at the Katharine Susannah Prichard Writers' Centre, Greenmount. The residents will receive a salary of $650 and be given writing space and time to concentrate on, develop or complete a work in progress. The writer will also be invited to participate in Katharine Susannah Prichard (KSP) Writers' Centre activities.

The Selection Committee will be looking for a talented young writers able to show application to the craft of writing. It is expected that the writers will have some published material in the print, visual or broadcast media. Ideally, applicants should be working towards achieving their first major full-length publication. Applicants may conduct a workshop at the Centre during their residency. If the applicant wishes to do so full support will be given to that endeavour by the Centre. However, applicants who do not want to present a workshop will NOT be penalised.

2013

2013 Established Writer-In-Residence

Applications for 2013 Established Writer in Residence must be post marked on or before, Friday, 27th July 2012 (pending funding)

One position.

Full-time period of four (4) weeks, or equivalent part time. Salary: $3500.

The Established Writer-in-Residence should have achieved major publication and have demonstrated a commitment towards furthering the status and practice of writing among his/her peers and the community in general. Experience in preparation for and conducting of workshops and seminars is desirable.

2013 Emerging Writer-In-Residence

Applications for 2012 Emerging Writer in Residence must be post marked on or before Friday 24th August 2012 (pending funding)

Three positions, dependent on funding.

Full-time period of four (4) weeks, or equivalent part time. Salary: $2250.

Emerging does not mean beginner. Preference for one position will be given to a WA regional writer or a Culturally and Linguistically Diverse writer.

The Selection Committee will be looking for talented writers able to show application to the craft of writing. It is expected that selected writers will have some published material, in the print, visual or broadcast media. Ideally, applicants should be working towards achieving their first major full-length publication.

Residency (How it works for writers and the Centre)

This information is mainly for Established and Emerging Writers. Young Writers are not required to present a workshop, but are welcome to present one workshop if they wish, and not required to give mentoring unless they wish to.

THE KSP WRITERS' CENTRE OFFERS:

• Workspace and accommodation in a heritage-listed house, the former home of Katharine Susannah Prichard, one of Australia's most revered writers.
• Alternative writing space in Katharine's cottage, a secluded garden-room especially built for Katharine to get away from the hurly-burly of the house.
• Access to the KSP writing community, with opportunities to attend our several group meetings as a guest or participant, and to conduct a workshop.
• Efforts will be made to promote the writer and the writer's work, especially in the local press, with the possibility of radio interviews

THE RESIDENT UNDERTAKES TO:

• Positively promote and represent the KSP Writers' Centre, before, during and after the residency, and to raise community awareness of writers and writing.
• Further community awareness of the Katharine Susannah Prichard Writers' Centre as a resource, helping to establish it as such for the future benefit of Western Australian writers and the wider community.
• Consult with the Centre's Coordinator in drawing up a program, which will include participation in the Centre's regular program and may include outside visits or workshops.
• Conduct one workshop on a topic in his/her field of interest over a minimum of three hours.
• Provide four hours of one-on-one mentoring to selected KSP writers.
• Give readings at one Literary Dinner at KSP.
• Spend productive hours on developing a work-in-progress.
• Write a report suitable for publication, which reflects the writer's experience while in residence.
• Complete an appropriate feedback report for the Management Committee.

THE RESIDENT IS EXPECTED TO:

• Participate in any public readings at the Centre scheduled to occur during the period of the residency, one of which would feature the writer.
• Chair any Meet-the-Writer events which occur during the residency, one of which may feature the writer.
• Consult with the Office Manager with respect to all matters relating to the residency, particularly in developing the Resident's program.
• Undertake other duties mutually agreed upon between the writer and the Foundation, such as promotional or literary events in association with KSP activities.
